Abstract

This research investigates the patterns underlying the emergence of "hot streaks"—periods of concentrated high-impact work—in artistic, cultural, and scientific careers. Using deep learning and network science methods applied to large datasets of artists, film directors, and scientists, the study finds that a sequence of exploration followed by exploitation consistently precedes hot streaks. Individuals tend to explore diverse styles or topics before a hot streak, then become significantly more focused after its onset. This exploration-exploitation sequence appears crucial for the initiation of high-impact periods, rather than exploration or exploitation alone.
