Undergraduates short-form video addiction and learning burnout association involving anxiety symptoms and coping styles moderation

M. Mao and F. Liao

Short-form video addiction is linked to higher anxiety and increased learning burnout among undergraduates — research conducted by Minghua Mao (School of Foreign Language, Suzhou University of Technology, Changshu, China) and Feng Liao (School of Mathematics and Statistics, Suzhou University of Technology, Changshu, China) finds anxiety mediates this link and that coping styles shape the direct effect, pointing to digital literacy and coping interventions.... show more
Abstract
Short-form video platforms have become ubiquitous, particularly among college students, raising concerns about addiction-like use patterns. This study examined the relationships among short-form video addiction, anxiety symptoms, coping styles, and learning burnout in undergraduates. Using convenience sampling, 523 college students completed validated questionnaire measures. Regression analyses tested mediation by anxiety symptoms; moderated mediation (PROCESS macro v3.5, Model 5) assessed moderation by coping styles. Short-form video addiction was positively associated with both learning burnout and anxiety symptoms, and anxiety symptoms mediated the addiction–burnout link. Negative coping styles significantly weakened the direct association between short-form video addiction and learning burnout. Findings suggest integrating digital literacy with mental health services and providing training in adaptive coping strategies to mitigate learning burnout.
