Abstract
Inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) research often faces challenges due to fragmented knowledge about methods and tools. This paper introduces "toolkitting," the practices involved in creating, using, maintaining, funding, and studying ITD toolkits. The authors argue that toolkitting is a vital, yet often overlooked, form of expertise. They present four case studies of ITD toolkits and analyze the expertise needed for their creation, maintenance, and scholarly study. The authors propose the development of a comprehensive toolkit inventory and a federated knowledge bank to improve accessibility and address fragmentation in the ITD field.
