This analysis explores the relationship between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles with staff work engagement at the department level in the public sector in Vietnam. Using a cluster sampling method, 378 participants completed a questionnaire. Regression analysis revealed a significant indirect relationship between staff work engagement and innovative work behavior and task performance. Transformational and transactional leadership styles positively correlated with staff work engagement, while laissez-faire leadership negatively impacted it. The findings suggest focusing on identifying and developing transformational and transactional leaders in the Vietnamese public sector.
