Nigeria, Africa's second-largest producer of social science research (SSR) after South Africa, possesses a substantial research system but faces low research productivity relative to its size. This mixed-methods study identifies two primary reasons: (i) low research inputs due to underfunding and researchers' limited time commitment resulting from a poor organizational climate, and (ii) a weak research support system lacking central coordination. The study suggests strengthening research coordination and improving the research climate are crucial for enhancing productivity.
