Abstract

This paper presents a bottom-up, country-scale model assessing a low energy demand pathway for Europe compatible with the 1.5°C climate target. Results indicate a 50% final energy demand reduction by 2050 compared to 2019 is achievable, with at least 40% attributed to sufficiency measures. This reduction allows for a 77% renewable energy share in 2040 and 100% in 2050, minimizing energy imports and eliminating the need for carbon sequestration technologies. Sufficiency promotes fairer energy service levels across countries.
