This paper reports the synthesis of a discrete molecular nanotube, covalent organic pillar (COP-1), through a [2+5] imine condensation reaction. A pair of enantiomeric nanotubes were synthesized, characterized, and resolved. Studies revealed that the nanotube's 2-nm-long and 4.7-Å-wide channel accommodates α,ω-disubstituted n-alkyl chains of complementary lengths and electron density. Length mismatches resulted in altered binding and unfavorable conformations.
