Sustainably developing global blue carbon for climate change mitigation and economic benefits through international cooperation

This groundbreaking study evaluated the sustainable development of global blue carbon over 24 years using the innovative Blue Carbon Development Index (BCDI). Abstract

This study assessed the sustainable development of global blue carbon (carbon stored in coastal ecosystems) over 24 years using a newly developed Blue Carbon Development Index (BCDI). The BCDI integrates driving forces, resource endowment, and development capacity. Results show an upward trend in BCDI scores, with regional variations. A global cooperation model was proposed to explore potential carbon sequestration increases and economic benefits, indicating significant gains under a deep cooperation scenario.
