Abstract
This study investigates the impact of different strip widths on the competitive strengths and grain yields of maize and soybean in a relay intercropping system (MSR). A two-year field experiment compared three strip-width arrangements (narrow, medium, and wide) with sole maize and sole soybean. Results showed that a medium strip width (200 cm) optimized yields for both maize and soybean, improving soybean's competitive ability without compromising maize's. This optimal width increased the total grain yield by 15% and land equivalent ratio by 22%, leading to a 99% increase in net income.
