Abstract
Water contamination due to environmental conditions and poor waste management limits access to safe drinking water, especially in electricity-poor regions lacking advanced purification infrastructure. This study demonstrates that titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO2NWs)-based photocatalytic filters powered solely by sunlight can efficiently decontaminate water. Interweaving TiO2NWs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) forms a TiO2NWs/CNTs composite that adds a visible-light-driven pasteurization channel via photothermal heating. The nanoporous filter intercepts various microbial pathogens, including bacteria and large viruses. Photocatalytically generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the TiO2NWs/CNTs surface under sunlight contribute to removal of a broad range of organic compounds and microbes. A pilot study also showed encouraging reductions of trace drugs and pesticides in drinking water.
