Abstract
Achieving sustainability requires radical changes to production and consumption. This paper reviews degrowth literature to identify challenges for implementing degrowth policies. Three key challenges are discussed: the internal growth dependencies of established social policies, the role of public welfare provision alongside informal economies, and securing broad public support beyond the existing 'new left' or 'green left' constituencies. The paper emphasizes the need for new norms and values concerning wellbeing, shifting from materialistic to needs-oriented conceptions.
