Climate change and population growth in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) are increasing wildfire frequency and smoke exposure. This paper presents the Smoke Sense citizen science project, a smartphone app designed to engage users, share information, and motivate health protective behaviors during wildfire smoke events. The authors propose a synergistic approach combining citizen and behavioral science to address the intention-action gap in reducing smoke exposure. The approach leverages social norms, positive reinforcement, friction reduction, and self-efficacy enhancement to encourage protective actions.
