Abstract
Infection with SARS-CoV-2 causes a wide range of disease severities. This review discusses the association between T cells and COVID-19 disease severity and protection upon re-exposure. While infiltration of overactivated cytotoxic T cells might be harmful, fast-responding T cells are crucial for protection against severe COVID-19. This protection could be long-term due to long-living memory T cells. Including N or M proteins in vaccinations, alongside the S protein, could broaden T cell response and improve protection.
