Abstract

In February 2023, Antarctic sea ice reached a record minimum extent, marking the third record-breaking low in seven years. This exceptionally low sea ice persisted through autumn and winter, resulting in the largest negative areal extent anomalies in the satellite era. The study links this to subsurface Southern Ocean warming and suggests that ocean warming has driven Antarctic sea ice into a new, lower-extent state with altered seasonal persistence characteristics.
