Abstract

This study reveals a near doubling of monsoon depressions (MDs) over the North Arabian Sea between 2001-2022 compared to 1981-2000. This increase is attributed to changes in dynamic and thermodynamic conditions, including heightened sea surface temperature, moisture flux, and convergence. A poleward shift in the low-level jet, influenced by East Asian jet variability, plays a significant role. This increase contrasts with a decline in MDs over the Bay of Bengal and contributes to increased rainfall over northwestern India.
