Recent intensified riverine CO₂ emission across the Northern Hemisphere permafrost region

C. Mu, K. Li, et al.

Using 5,685 new and published river pCO2 measurements across the Arctic and Tibetan Plateau, this study finds that rivers in the Northern Hemisphere permafrost zone emit 200 ± 15 Tg C yr⁻¹—offsetting about 28% of land carbon uptake—and that emissions increased by ~0.42 ± 0.16 Tg C yr⁻¹ (2000–2020), driven mainly by increased precipitation and accelerated permafrost thaw.
