This systematic review examines the efficacy of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in treating depression. Eight studies were included, revealing significant and sustained reductions in depressive symptoms after one or two psilocybin sessions, even in treatment-resistant cases. The role of the therapist in establishing a therapeutic alliance and integrating the psychedelic experience is highlighted. While adverse effects were generally mild and transient, limitations include a small number of studies, geographic bias, and potential expectancy effects. Future research should explore different psychotherapy approaches and the role of spiritual experiences.
