Abstract
Physical fatigue significantly impacts our decisions regarding effortful actions. This study uses fMRI to investigate how fatigue affects effort-based decision-making at the brain and behavioral levels. Researchers found that fatiguing exertions increase the subjective cost of effort, a mechanism involving motor cortical signals in the premotor cortex influencing effort value computations in the insula. This provides a neurobiological explanation for how bodily state modulates physical activity decisions.
