Abstract
Cooperation within and across borders is crucial for public goods provision. Parochialism, favoring ingroup cooperation, hinders global public goods. This study investigates national parochialism (greater cooperation among same-nation members) across 42 nations (N = 18,411). An experiment using a prisoner's dilemma with ingroup, outgroup, and unidentified partners reveals ubiquitous national parochialism, similar across nations, independent of cultural distance, and occurring in both private and public decision-making. This suggests national parochialism may significantly impede global public goods provision.
