This study investigates the distribution of microplastics (MPs) within the riverbed of the meandering River Lys, Belgium. Higher MP concentrations were found near riverbanks compared to the thalweg, correlating with river hydrodynamics. Organic matter and mud content strongly predicted MP concentrations, except in outer bends where erosion exposed older, MP-free floodplain sediments. These findings improve understanding of small-scale MP distribution and guide future sampling strategies for better quantification of MPs in river sediments and other aquatic environments.
