Abstract
This paper uses anonymized high-frequency mobile phone data to measure the impact of violence on internal displacement in Afghanistan. The study finds that high-casualty events and violence involving the Islamic State cause the most displacement, with provincial capitals acting as magnets for those fleeing violence in outlying areas. The research highlights the potential of non-traditional data sources for research and policymaking in conflict settings.
