Marine ecosystem-based management: challenges remain, yet solutions exist, and progress is occurring

Marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) is shaping the future of ocean sustainability, addressing complex tradeoffs among diverse ocean-use sectors. A recent survey of over 150 international EBM experts highlights both significant progress and ongoing challenges, along with innovative solutions to these issues. This exciting research, conducted by a collaborative team of experts, reveals that advancements in EBM are more substantial than previously recognized.

Abstract

Marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) is recognized as best practice for managing multiple ocean-use sectors, explicitly addressing tradeoffs. A poll of over 150 international EBM experts revealed progress, challenges (governance, stakeholder engagement, support, understanding of EBM, technology/data, communication), and solutions. Identifiable solutions exist for these challenges, and some address multiple impediments simultaneously. Substantial progress on EBM is occurring, more than previously reported.
