This study investigated the association between long-term artificial sweetener (ArtSw) intake and adipose tissue accumulation. Using data from the CARDIA study (3088 participants), researchers found positive associations between total ArtSw, aspartame, and saccharin intakes with visceral, intermuscular, and subcutaneous adipose tissue volumes. Diet beverage intake also showed similar associations. Sucralose intake, however, showed no such relationship. Furthermore, ArtSw intake (except saccharin) was linked to increased risk of obesity. The findings suggest that long-term consumption of aspartame, saccharin, and diet sodas may contribute to increased adipose tissue deposition and obesity risk, independent of caloric intake and diet quality.
