Long-distance exploration in insightful problem-solving
Z. C. Chao, F. Hsieh, et al.
Insight — the sudden "Aha" that solves previously intractable problems — was probed using two versions of the Japanese remote associates test (n = 349 and n = 105) and a simulation model. By manipulating problem constraints and tracking search across the solution space, the authors found that insight-related "Aha" moments involve exploration across greater distances in solution space, broadening the set of candidate solutions available for evaluation. This research was conducted by Zenas C. Chao, Feng-Yang Hsieh, and Chien-Te Wu.
