Maintaining electric grid reliability is increasingly challenging due to frequent extreme weather and intermittent generation. This paper explores using the US rail system as a nationwide backup transmission grid, transporting containerized batteries (Rail-Based Mobile Energy Storage or RMES) to meet peak demands, relieve congestion, and enhance resilience. The study finds RMES a feasible solution for low-frequency, high-impact events, offering significant cost savings compared to transmission infrastructure and stationary battery investments. While technically feasible, addressing interconnection challenges and regulatory frameworks is crucial for large-scale deployment.
