Abstract

This paper investigates the intensification of heatwaves in China during recent decades, focusing on the role of climate modes. Analysis of observations and model experiments reveals a significant increase in heatwave intensity across China, particularly between 1993 and 2000, with the intensification persisting in northern and western regions even after removing the warming trend. The combined influence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) explains a substantial portion of the observed heatwave intensification. Decadal shifts in atmospheric circulation, linked to the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) and AMO, are implicated in the abrupt increase in heatwaves. The study highlights the importance of concurrent phase transitions of decadal climate modes in modulating heatwave intensity.
