Individual and community-level factors associated with non-institutional delivery of women of childbearing-age in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of non-institutional delivery among women of reproductive age in Nigeria using the 2018 National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) data. The study employed multilevel binary logistic regression analysis on a sample of 12,567 women. Results revealed that 56.8% of women preferred home births. Educated women, urban dwellers, those with high media exposure, higher income, and greater autonomy were less likely to deliver outside health institutions. The study recommends expanding educational opportunities, strengthening advocacy, and using focused group discussions and peer education to promote health facility deliveries.
