This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on scientists' productivity in STEM and medicine fields using an online survey of 2548 scientists across 132 countries. The pandemic led to delays and restrictions in research, increased workloads from online teaching, and increased caregiving responsibilities, particularly for mothers. While many faced challenges, some reported advantages such as increased funding for COVID-related research and the flexibility of remote work. The study highlights the need for institutional support to mitigate the negative effects of crises on scientific productivity and address gender inequities.
