This paper analyzes the occurrence of 30 pre-defined daily weather patterns and nearly 70,000 power system failures in the UK (2010-2019) to investigate the predictability of weather-induced outages. High-risk weather patterns and transitions are identified for all seasons. Winter patterns with high wind speeds and precipitation are linked to wind, gale, and lightning outages; patterns with moderate to high snowfall are linked to snow and ice outages. The reliable forecastability of these patterns can significantly improve preparedness for adverse weather.
