Abstract

This paper empirically demonstrates the difficulty in reading recent Japanese names correctly, a challenge previously noted but not empirically investigated. Analysis of baby names from 2004-2018 reveals that common name writings have numerous reading variations, making correct interpretation difficult even for native speakers. The variations significantly differ in pronunciation, length, and meaning. This research contributes to understanding naming practices in Japan and regions using Chinese characters.
