Abstract
In societies where education holds high significance and parental ambitions for children’s academic achievements are profound, understanding the rationale behind parental school choice becomes crucial. This study asks: Are Saudi parents rational in selecting their children’s schools? Using semi-structured interviews with Saudi parents whose children attend private (K–12) schools, the analysis shows cultural and religious identity as a predominant factor, including preferences for gender segregation, English over Arabic instruction for some, and emphasis on Islamic education. Accessibility (school location and fees) significantly shapes choices. Wellbeing is a critical consideration. Academic factors—including skills development, school pedagogy and staff quality, and learning outcomes—also strongly influence selection.
