Abstract
This study analyzes data to determine differences between oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFSs) and dentists regarding dental extractions without clinical indication. A survey of 18 questions was sent to 256 OMFSs and 800 dentists in the Netherlands. Results showed that a significant percentage of both groups received requests for extractions without clinical indication, most often due to financial reasons or severe dental fear. Dentists were more likely to comply with these requests than OMFSs. Few practitioners regretted their decisions. There was no significant difference in checking patients' mental competency.
