High-level visual prediction errors in early visual cortex

Perception reflects both sensory input and expectations. Using fMRI and deep neural network models, this study shows that surprising signals originate at high levels of the visual hierarchy and are broadcast back to earlier visual areas, suggesting high-level predictions constrain early sensory processing — research conducted by David Richter, Tim C.
