Abstract
This paper examines the representation of guns in Bangla cinema from Bangladesh and West Bengal, arguing that their use reflects a shift from historical reality to hyperreality, symptomatic of contemporary Bengali culture in an age of mass consumption. The authors analyze three phases: films reflecting Partition violence (around 1947); films depicting the 1971 Liberation War; and contemporary commercial cinema. The paper hypothesizes that the first two phases represent attempts to approximate historical realities, with guns symbolizing power, resistance, and liberation. Conversely, the third phase embodies an age of simulations, with little organic connection to ground realities.
