This paper argues that religious categorization based on institutional religion is inadequate for understanding Chinese society's cultural and religious life. It emphasizes the significance of folk religion, rooted in the "life-world," and its historical impact on the relationship between national elites, institutionalized religion, and civil society. The paper examines the revival of folk religion in contemporary China and its contribution to the renewal of religious categorization, facilitating social integration and enhancing cultural diversity.
