This paper presents a first-principles theory for the reconnection rate in non-relativistic electron-ion collisionless plasmas, explaining why Sweet-Parker reconnection is slower. The key is the pressure at the reconnection site (x-line). Hall electromagnetic fields cause pressure depletion at the x-line, enabling fast reconnection. The results are relevant to heliospheric, planetary magnetosphere, fusion, and astrophysical plasma studies.
