This study investigates the geographical variations in public climate change opinions (CCOs) across 4,667 German municipalities using a representative household survey. Substantial differences are found between urban and rural areas, and between prospering and declining regions. Historical and cultural factors, particularly the legacy of East-West Germany division and the strength of local green political cultures, also play significant roles. Multilevel regression analysis confirms these findings while controlling for individual-level socio-demographic factors. The study highlights the importance of considering local contexts when designing and implementing climate change policies.
