This paper investigates the existence and characteristics of neutral networks in RNA ligase ribozymes using a deep learning-guided evolutionary algorithm. The researchers experimentally analyzed the activities of all 216 variants connecting two active ribozymes differing by 16 mutations, discovering an extensive neutral network. They found that lower-order mutational interactions can predict these neutral paths, providing empirical evidence supporting the role of neutral networks in increasing the accessibility and predictability of fitness landscapes.
