This study investigates the presence and transport of microplastics in the free troposphere, a region previously considered beyond the reach of plastic pollution. Samples collected at the Pic du Midi Observatory (2877 meters above sea level) over four summer months revealed microplastic particle concentrations of 0.09–0.66 particles/m³. Air mass back-trajectory modeling indicated intercontinental and trans-oceanic transport, demonstrating the potential for global dispersal of atmospheric microplastics.
