Abstract
This study investigates the protein leverage hypothesis in children and adolescents using data from the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) study. Results show an inverse association between proportional energy intake of proteins and total energy intake, consistent with protein leverage. Increased energy intake on low-protein diets was balanced by increased energy expenditure, preventing increased adiposity. The study provides evidence supporting protein leverage in a population sample of children and adolescents.
