Abstract
This study investigates the correlation between mentions of cocaine in song lyrics and the incidence of cocaine use and mortality in the US from 2000 to 2017. Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the Centers for Disease Control, along with lyric data from Lyrics.com, the researchers employed distributed lag models. Results indicate a significant association between increased cocaine mentions in lyrics and a subsequent rise in cocaine use and mortality, with a two-year lag observed for mortality. This suggests that popular music trends may serve as a valuable tool for tracking cocaine-related epidemiological trends.
