This study investigates the enhanced cancer risk in companion animals due to increased longevity. Using a multi-step cancer model, the authors show that environmental improvements leading to longer lifespans increase cancer prevalence in the short term, even without changes in genomic error rates. However, in the long term, evolution favors lower genomic error rates, mitigating cancer risk. The model explores the interplay between short-term (non-evolutionary) and long-term (evolutionary) responses to environmental changes.
