Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), a mindfulness-based intervention, on opioid dosing in veterans with chronic pain. EEG data were collected during meditation sessions before and after an 8-week MORE program or a supportive psychotherapy control. The MORE group showed increased alpha and theta power, particularly theta, and increased frontal midline theta coherence. Importantly, MORE significantly reduced opioid dosage, an effect partially mediated by increased frontal theta power. These findings suggest that mindfulness meditation may stimulate endogenous theta activity in the prefrontal cortex, enhancing inhibitory control over opioid use.
