Abstract
This study examines the influence of parental socioeconomic status (SES) and parenting values on adolescents’ expected fields of study. Results indicate that parental economic status increases the likelihood of adolescents expecting to choose extrinsically rewarding fields (e.g., high earning potential), while high parental cultural status shows a stronger positive correlation with girls' expectations of intrinsically rewarding fields (e.g., personal fulfillment). Conformity-oriented parenting increases boys' expectations of extrinsic fields, whereas self-direction in girls is linked to extrinsic field expectations.
