Abstract
This study investigates the use of euphemistic strategies by Iraqi Arabic (IA) speakers and the effect of gender and degree of formality on their use. A discourse completion test (DCT) was administered to 160 Iraqi university students (80 males, 80 females). Findings reveal that deletion, fuzzy words, and implication strategies were most frequent for death, mental illness, and obesity, respectively. Formality significantly impacted euphemism use in mental illness, while gender influenced euphemism across all three topics.
