Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of government stringency measures on COVID-19 cases and deaths in Malawi using an instrumental variable (IV) approach. The study finds that despite the absence of a full lockdown, government policies significantly reduced both cases and deaths. A one-unit increase in the stringency index resulted in a decrease of 179 cases and 6 deaths. These findings highlight the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions and underscore the importance of public adherence to such measures.
