This study economically evaluates ion exchange (IEX) processes for nutrient removal and recovery from municipal wastewater, comparing them to traditional biological nutrient removal (BNR). Two IEX configurations were designed for a 10,000 population equivalent plant and coupled with activated sludge or anaerobic membrane processes. The 40-year whole life cost (WLC) of IEX was 17-27% lower than BNR, with annual recovery of ~98 tonnes of (NH₄)₂SO₄ and 3.4 tonnes of Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH). Lower costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient recovery make IEX an attractive alternative.
