Abstract

This study investigated bacterial bioindicators of soil health using 16S rRNA gene sequencing data from farmland across North America. Bioindicators correlated with twelve soil properties were identified, with most showing positive correlations with biological properties (e.g., organic matter) and negative correlations with physical and chemical properties. Higher soil health ratings corresponded with smaller genome size and higher coding density. An environment-wide association study (EWAS) linked bioindicators to environmental disturbances. The findings provide ecological insights into the relationship between the soil microbiome and soil function, relevant to soil health management.
