Dynamic tuning of neural stability for cognitive control

M. Xu, T. Hosokawa, et al.

The brain balances robustness and flexibility by maintaining and selectively updating neural activity patterns. Studying monkey prefrontal cortex during covert rule maintenance and sensory integration, the authors identify a 70 ms delay after response onset that enables transient system-level destabilization, opening a temporal window to incorporate new information. This allows robustness and sensitivity to coexist and reveals a learned, explicit rule representation.
