Dynamic switching between brain networks predicts creative ability

Q. Chen, Y. N. Kenett, et al.

Creativity emerges from balanced dynamic switching between the brain's Default Mode and Executive Control networks. In a large multi-center study of 2,433 participants across five countries, time-resolved fMRI showed that DMN-ECN switching predicts divergent thinking and follows an inverted-U relationship with creative performance; an independent task-fMRI study (N=31) validated these findings.
